Compound Nouns

Compound Nouns are two words combined together to make one word.



There are three forms of compound Nouns:

Definition:

Closed Form - The words are put together to make one word. No hyphen.

Example:

1. firefly 5. keyboard
2. secondhand 6. makeup
3. softball 7. notebook
4. crosstown 8. childlike
Hyphenated Form - The words are put together to make one word. Using a hyphen.
1. daughter-in-law 4. six-pack,
2. master-at-arms 5. six-year-old,
3. over-the-counter 6. mass-produced
Open Form -The words are put together to make one word. No hyphen.
1. post office 4. real estate
2. upper class 5. full moon
3. half sister 6. attorney general.
