The Possessives

Definition:

Possessive pronouns are words that stand by themselves. There is no noun behind them.

Examples:

mine ours
your yours
hers/his theirs

Sample Sentence:

1. The pencil is mine.

2. That test is hers.

Definition:

Possessive adjectives do not stand by themselves.

Possessive adjectives are placed directly in front of the noun.

Examples:

my book our books
your book your books
his/her/its book their books

Sample Sentence:

1. My hair is brown.

2. Your pen is on the table.

Note: All possessive nouns will have apostrophes after them. All possessives pronouns will not have apostrophes after them.

Example:
Possessive noun:
That football is the school's.
Possessive adjective: That football is mine.
The women's hair is brown.
