Definition:

If the last 2 letters of the verb ends with a vowel and is followed by a consonant, and its a 1 syllable verb.

You must:

1.
Double the consonant and add an "-ed" to make the verb past tense.

2. Double the consonant and add an "-ing" to make the verb continuous.

(Examples: 1, 2, and 3)

Examples:

One syllable words

1. drag – dragged – dragging

2. stop – stopped – stopping

3. drop – dropped – dropping

If the last three letters of the verb ends with 2 vowels followed by 1 consonant, and it is a 1 syllable verb.

You must:

1. Keep the same spelling of the verb and add an
"-ed" to make the verb past tense.

2. Keep the same spelling of the verb and add an
"-ing" to make the verb continuous.

(Examples: 1 and 2)

Examples:

One syllable words

1. droop – drooped – drooping

2. loan – loaned – loaning

Definiton:

If the verb ends with 1 vowel followed by 1 consonant, and it is a 2 syllable verb.

You must:

1. Simply add an "-ed" to make the verb
past tense.

2. Simply add an "-ing" to make the verb continuous.

(Examples: 1, 2, and 3)

Examples:

Two Syllable Words

1. open – opened - opening

2. visit – visited – visiting   

3. answer – answered – answering

 



Verbs that end with two consonants.

Definition:

If the verb ends with two consonants, simply add the “-ing” or “-ed” ending. Do not change the spelling of the word, just add the correct ending.

Examples:

1. reach – reached – reaching 

2. work – worked – working 

3. wash – washed – washing
