Using Expressions of Place with Progressive Tenses
Definition:

You will often see an expression of place after the auxiliary verb be and the main verb ending with -ing. This is shown in sentence examples (1, 2, and 3).

Examples:

1. Mike is playing at the playground.

2. Seth is sleeping on the couch.

3. Eric was studying at his desk.


Sentence Structure for Expressions of Place
1. It(subject) is raining(verb) in(preposition) Seattle(noun).
 
2. A baby(subject) is crying(verb) on(preposition) my shoulder(noun).
 
3. Birds(subject) fly(verb) in(preposition) the sky(noun).
