Definition:

Verbs that are not followed by an object are called Intransitive Verbs.

 

Example:

1. Babies(subject) cry(verb).

2. Students(subject) read(verb).

*Notice, there is no action going toward an object. There are no words following the verbs.


Transitive Verbs

Definition:

Transitive Verbs are followed by an object.

Common Examples:

agree arrive
come cry
exist go
happen live
occur rise
rain sleep
stay walk

Example:

1. The rain(subject) falls(verb) on the house(object).

2. The baby(subject) cried(verb) on my shoulder(noun/object).

3. The bird(noun) flew(verb) into the window(noun/object).
